The Marshlands of Vigueirat offer themselves
as a driving force for sustainable rural development in connection
with nature and ecotourism.
2 vocations and 1 project
In conjunction with the Coastal conservatory,
landowner, the Marshlands of Vigueirat have built their development
project on 2 vocations of their structure:
Nature protection and a socio-economic dimension research
with integration in the local economy by the public reception .
For the Marshlands of Vigueirat , the initial objective and
priority is the protection of natural heritage,
especially in the sanctuary area, which covers 9 / 10 of the territory:
in this sector biologically rich and diverse, a maximum attendance
of visitor not to exceed has been analysed: not more than 10000 visitors
a year. Only guided visits are allowed. .
The project of Marshlands of Vigueirat consists in creating a tourist
attraction centre in a sector far from tourism activities and of 150
hectares of old agricultural lands. The objective is the rural development,
aiming at 50 to 100000 visitors.. |

| 3 phases for the development project
of the Marshlands of Vigueirat
Phase 1: the feasibility (1996 to 2003)
The purpose of this 1st phase was to show the wealth
of fauna and flora on 150 hectares at the north: this area the closest
to Mas-Thibert is chosen for the discovery of the nature.
Assessment: The first phase concerning feasibility
was completed at the end of 2003 without any infringement on the
fauna or flora
The site in 2003 has already created more than 40 jobs including
25 local jobs, welcoming nearly 15000 visitors a year.
An ecotourism pole was in place in 2003.
phase 2 : the Life PROMESSE (2003 to
2007)
with ecotourism and ecoresponsability associates to protection demand
 The
aim is to reduce the impact of existing human activities
and the future ones on the site,
in the context of responsible tourism.
For that, Europe, WWF and many partners are committed on the territory
of the Marshlands of Vigueirat , in a vast program called Life
PROMESSE, It deals with improving the infrastructures,
awareness and transmission of experience and a reflection on the
territory of the Grand Plan Bourg.
Assessment 2005-2006: at the Marshlands of Vigueirat :
l'environnement.

assessment 2007 at the Grand Plan du Bourg : local stakeholders
are associated with the approach of the Marshlands of Vigueirat
through a dialogue, in other words an exercise of participatory
democracy in which the inhabitants are mobilised for a ten-year
plan of sustainable development.
assessment at the end of 2007 for scholars (CPIE Rhône
Pays d'Arles) :
- label Eco-school to school Daudet in Raphèle,
- approach to many local schools on the subject of Eco-school
, with a teacher-book.
assessment ecotourism : at the Marshlands
of Vigueirat , baseline studies and selection of scenarios were
conducted in relation to infrastructures. Ecotourism activity generated
20 000 visitors.
This phase will be accompanied with a tourism diversification in
creating a botanical garden and bicycle path.
.
phase 3 : sustainable tourism with local population ?
Complementary equipments (reception and parking at
Mas-Thibert, electric boat to transport visitors on the canal,…)
will directly involve the local population, to revive the local
economy, and deal with the pressures of tourism in the urban area
of Mas-Thibert… possible, if the outcome of the consultation
results in such a program! |
